Survival counts

Isolated cells always survive. Birth and survival counts govern all other Life decisions.

Zero holds the heading. Otherwise, turn after this many Steps. Editing restarts the compass clocks.

Cells seek empty survival destinations. Competing claims cancel every move; cells do not retry.

Safe Passage

Isolated cells follow their compass and cannot die. Other cells seek adjacent survival opportunities; competing claims cancel movement.

Current composition

01Freeze the board. A living cell with zero neighbors survives and proposes its compass direction without a destination count check. Otherwise, each organism seeks an adjacent empty position that permits survival under B3478/S278, excluding its own departing body from the destination count.
02Choose the nearest compass direction; equal distances favor clockwise or counterclockwise sense. Every cell proposes once.
03One claim moves and survives. Multiple claims cancel all contenders. Isolated cells stay alive; others live or die at their original frozen counts. There is no retry.
04Other empty positions apply ordinary birth counts. An accepted arrival takes the place of a birth. All results commit together, then surviving compasses turn when due.

Select a living organism to inspect its ranked survival destinations.

* Candidate counts remove the selected organism from its old position. For isolated cells these counts are diagnostic only; the current compass direction overrides the mask. The arrow shows its current compass; the written compass shows the next tick. Mint outlines qualify; cyan is an accepted target; coral is contested. The organism can leave while this position becomes empty. A newborn does not move until the following Step.
